What it is

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that is badly damaged, infected, crowded, or causing problems, such as a wisdom tooth that has not come in properly. It is a common procedure, and your dentist can talk with you about options for replacing the tooth if needed.

Step 1

Before your visit

  • Tell your dentist about all your medications, especially blood thinners, and any health conditions.
  • If you are having sedation, follow the eating and drinking instructions you are given and arrange a ride home.
  • Stock up on soft foods, such as yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes, for the first few days.
  • Plan a quiet rest of the day after your appointment.

Step 2

During the visit

  1. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and some people also have sedation.
  2. The tooth is gently loosened and removed. You feel pressure, but you should not feel sharp pain.
  3. Some teeth, such as impacted wisdom teeth, need a small opening in the gum or are removed in pieces.
  4. Gauze is placed to help a blood clot form, and stitches may be used.

Step 3

After and recovery

  • Bite gently on gauze as directed to control bleeding. Some oozing on the first day is normal.
  • For the first few days, avoid rinsing hard, spitting, smoking, and drinking through a straw. These can dislodge the clot.
  • Use cold compresses for swelling, rest, and take pain relief as your dentist recommends.
  • Eat soft foods and keep the area clean as instructed.
  • Call the office if pain gets worse after a few days, or if you have a fever, heavy bleeding, or swelling that keeps growing.

Common questions

Does having a tooth pulled hurt?

The area is numbed first, so most people feel pressure but not pain. Some soreness afterwards is normal and usually improves over a few days.

What is a dry socket?

It happens when the blood clot in the socket comes away too early, leaving the bone exposed. It causes a throbbing pain a few days after the extraction. It can be treated, so call your dentist if you think you have one.

How long does healing take?

The gum usually feels much better within one to two weeks. The bone underneath takes longer to heal fully.

Should the tooth be replaced?

It depends on the tooth. Replacing a missing tooth can help keep the teeth nearby from shifting. Your dentist can explain options such as implants, bridges, or dentures.
