What it is

Clear aligners are a series of thin, clear, removable trays that gradually move your teeth into better positions. Each set is worn for a set time before you move on to the next. Invisalign is one well-known brand. Aligners are used for crowding, gaps, and many bite problems.

Step 1

Before your visit

  • Start with a consultation to see whether aligners suit your teeth and bite.
  • Expect records to be taken: photos, X-rays, and a scan or impressions of your teeth.
  • Any cavities or gum problems are usually treated before aligner treatment begins.
  • Think about whether you can wear the trays for most of the day. Aligners only work while they are worn.

Step 2

During the visit

  1. Your dentist plans how your teeth will move, and you may see a preview of the expected result.
  2. Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip.
  3. You receive your first aligners and learn how to put them in, take them out, and clean them.
  4. You switch to each new set on schedule, with check-ins to track your progress.

Step 3

After and recovery

  • Each new set may feel tight for a day or two. That pressure means your teeth are moving.
  • Wear your aligners as directed, often most of the day and night, and take them out to eat or drink anything but water.
  • Brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in, and clean the trays gently.
  • When treatment ends, a retainer keeps your teeth in their new position.

Common questions

Do clear aligners hurt?

Most people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two with each new set, rather than pain.

How long does treatment take?

It depends on how far your teeth need to move. Simple cases can be quicker and complex ones take longer. Your dentist can give you an estimate once your treatment is planned.

Can I eat with my aligners in?

No. Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than plain water, then brush before putting them back in.

Are aligners right for everyone?

Many people are good candidates, but some complex bite problems are better treated with braces. Your dentist can tell you which option fits your situation.
