What it is

Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose soft inner tissue, called the pulp, is infected or inflamed. The pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, and you keep your tooth. Many people say it feels much like having a filling.

Step 1

Before your visit

• If your dentist has prescribed medication, such as antibiotics, take it exactly as directed.
• Eat beforehand. You will likely be numb for a few hours afterwards.
• Ask whether the tooth is likely to need a crown afterwards, so you can plan ahead.
• If you feel anxious, tell the team. They can explain each step as they go.

Step 2

During the visit

1. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and a thin sheet called a dental dam keeps it clean and dry.
2. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the pulp.
3. The infected or inflamed tissue is removed, and the canals inside the root are cleaned and shaped.
4. The canals are filled and sealed, and the opening is closed with a temporary or permanent filling.

Step 3

After and recovery

• The tooth may feel tender for a few days. Ask your dentist which pain relief is right for you.
• Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until the tooth is fully restored.
• Many back teeth need a crown after a root canal to protect them from cracking. Your dentist will advise you.
• Call the office if you have swelling, severe pain, or a reaction to any medication.
